What Is Cranio-Sacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy is a very gentle hands-on therapy which assists the body’s capacity for self-repair. It works directly on the central nervous system, helping every other system in the body to relax, release trauma and contraction patterns in the body and help to self-regulate. You will usually lie on a treatment table while the therapist’s hands make light contact to work with the craniosacral system – the inherent tissue movements of the body. This gentle approach does not use manipulation.

Every muscle, ligament, bone, organ & tissue has an innate movement within the body which is an expression of its health. These are physical movements that are small but can be felt through contact when appropriately trained. When pain or illness is present these movements are often inhibited or even restricted.

By working with these movements through direct contact the therapist can mobilise restricted areas, promote release of trauma & restore motion again. The result is relief of tension and pain and increased movement & flexibility.

What Can I Expect?

Your initial visit is 75 minutes and includes:

  • 15 minute discussion of your health history

  • 1 hour of cranio-sacral therapy

Your regular sessions can either be 60 minutes or 75 minutes (this is your choice!) and includes:

  • 5-10 minute discussion following up on your previous visit

  • Remainder of time for cranio-sacral therapy

For each visit:

  • You will lie fully clothed on a treatment table so be sure to come in comfortable clothes

  • Your practitioner (in this case the wonderful Anne!) works with light contact on relevant areas of the body (often the feet, head and sacrum) promoting release of restriction & contraction patterns in the tissues

  • You may experience a number of sensations, such as tingling, heat and small internal movements as the body adjusts (slight jerks). If you feel any of these do not be alarmed, they are perfectly normal 🙂
